The "SkinScreener" project was launched with the vision of revolutionising the early detection of skin cancer. The app uses state-of-the-art AI technology to recognise malignant skin lesions simply by scanning them with a smartphone camera. The aim: a precise and efficient diagnosis that can save lives.
An important step in the early detection of skin cancer
With the SkinScreener app, users have the opportunity to scan moles, skin spots, skin lesions and other skin changes using their smartphone camera. Through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), the algorithm assesses the skin cancer risk of the detected object with an accuracy of 95 %. (supported by a study by the Medical University of Graz).
Recommendations are then issued as to whether a dermatological specialist should be consulted.
SkinScreener thus sets new standards in the early detection of skin cancer and has a positive impact on health maintenance and disease prevention in society.
Relaunch
The first versions of the app were mainly focused on optimizing the AI technology and its accuracy in detecting and classifying skin spots. The new version of the app developed by Denovo has been given a modern and intuitive design that significantly increases user-friendliness. The content has been reorganised and is now clearer and easier to access.
New features, such as the reminder and feedback function, make the app easier and more enjoyable to use and in future the option of requesting an assessment from an e-doctor will also be offered.

SkinScreener is a certified MDR Class IIa medical device. It was therefore essential to take some standards into account during development such as IEC 62304 and ISO 13485. The first one regulates the requirements for processes in the development and maintenance of medical device software. The second represents the requirements for a comprehensive quality management system for the design and manufacture of medical devices.
